Spilosoma aerea, Arctia osulatissima (1833)

​James Duncan (1804–1861) was a Scottish naturalist and author renowned for his contributions to entomology. His seminal work, The Natural History of Foreign Butterflies, published in 1837, features 33 hand-colored plates illustrating various butterfly species from warmer climates. This publication reflects Duncan’s dedication to studying and documenting the intricate beauty of tropical butterflies. Beyond this, he collaborated on several other entomological works, including Entomologia Edinensis and Beetles, British and Foreign, further establishing his prominence in the field. His meticulous illustrations and writings continue to be celebrated for their scientific and artistic value.
